Video - Numbers

After being tasked with producing a short video based around a script, I produced the following video titled Numbers. This was my first attempt at full video editing with voice audio too, I had to sync this up as I recorded the audio using a phone - in an attempt to get the same clear volume of audio throughout the video.

I used Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 for editing and the music used is called Simplex by http://incompetech.com/

  1. 00:13 - In future, with this kind of shot, you should aim for a smoother tilt; it looks a
    little shaky

00:15 - a little odd to cut from an LS to an MCU at roughly the same angle.Continuity seems
slightly off here. I like the way you frame the MCU

00:20 - again, a little odd to cut between two shots which are effectively the same (both
effectively MCU) although I like the use of the jump cut and also the way you've done the
tracking shot here - very dynamic and effective

00:29 - not so keen on the angles here, since you're cutting your subject off a lot. This
would be more effective if you were deliberately trying to hide his identity; however, I
think we've already seen his face

00:32 - I like the ECU here, although continuity wise you've flipped sides; your subject
effectively exited to the right and seems here to be entering from the right

00:42 - in general, the camera operation is very well done. The music works effectively as well

00:51 - I rather like ths shot here although it might have been more effective if it was more explicitly out of focus (I like the contrast between the colder outdoor shots and the warm orange here)

01:02 - not sure the shot here works as well - would have preferred to see a little more complexity in terms of editing and composition. In the final piece you will need to shoot a range of different shots and angles, so it's worth getting into that rhythm now. The shot of Niamh at 01:03 is very good (although the lighting is a little dark); I would like to
    see more of this

01:10 - I'm glad to see you using a range of angles here; not so sure about the zoom on Dan
    in the previous shot

01:11 - I do like the CU of Niamh's hands; unfortunately, there is an action match continuity error here (look at her hands in the previous shot)

01:15 - again, an effective edit between Niamh's hands and Dan - I like the composition and the stylistic link. Could do without the zoom here

01:19 - not sure about the tilt here - seems a bit random. You seem to have a bit of noise at the end before the soundtrack kicks in

Overall, you've demonstrated that you can organise a shoot, compose and shoot a range of shots and angles, including some effective camera-movement, and edit together a sequence in order to make narrative sense. You've also utilised a range of locations. Your next step is to consider the effects of using certain techniques - you should look at a
range of professional productions and seek to replicate the conventions of these in order to achieve a greater degree of verisimilitude. An effective effort - well done
